Linen is made from long-fibred flax. It’s a yearly plant nearly without hairs; the stem is from 30 to 60 cm height, belongs to the flax family, class – flax, Latin name - Linum usitatissimum . It is supposed that the plant comes from East Mediterranean. The preferable temperature is 15-18°С, not very sunny weather. The stem grows high and branches near the top. When it’s too hot, the stem stops growing and branches a lot, the fiber becomes shorter and coarse. Flax has a weak rootage, the roots are not deep in the soil, it’s necessary to use phosphate, potash, nitrogen fertilizers. The Egyptians were the first to grow flax several thousand years B.C. Then it spread to Palestine, Colchis (ancient Georgia), Italy, Western Europe and the territory of Russia. From time immemorial flax has been the most important plant for the Slavs beginning from the 2d century Long-fibred flax is used for the production of the thinnest linen – sheer lawn. Flax is harvested when the stems become yellow and the bottom leaves fall. At first flax is pulled with a machine TSL, i.e. it’s pulled out with the root and spread in the field so that the stems soak in dew.During the dew-retting fibers are separated from other tissues. Then the flax is turned. After drying with the help of a combine “Polesie”, there takes place flax trashing. Then the rolls are formed with the help of a presspicker PRL-150. These rolls are raw materials for processing at the mill. Raw materials come from shokha to a tambour and through a dryer to a layer-forming mechanism, then through a conveyor to a breaking-scutching machine, and we get long fiber flax (№ 9,10,11,12,13). Separated short fiber is processed in a tow-making machine, and we get short flax № 2,3,4,6. The waste is processed into hemp. Everything that is left after the production of flax fibre and hemp – boon is used for the heating of a boiler house. Other kinds of goods are also produced. So, the level of raw materials processing is 100%. |
